DC generators are always useful in case of power outages. Many commercial companies use generators as back up units. DC generators are also energy efficient.
Advantages and disadvantages of AC and DC generators?
(1) AC Generators are mostly Maintenance free,no brushes
2) Transmission easy, easily step up & step down
3)Transmission cable size can be thinner because of step up feature
4)Size of the Generator comparatively smaller than Dc machine
5) Generator cooling is easy with Hydrogen because of brushless no sparking.
6) Losses are comparatively less than DC machine
7) Ac Generator breakers are comparatively smaller than Dc breakers
8)Ac Generator are silent operator compare with Dc Generator.
9) Dc Generator, Dc used machine Speed control is very precession any RPM we can achieve with controller, where as Ac we can achieve by Gears only.I hope I
have given few important points many more we can add.
An alternator can charge the battery with the engine idling. Unlike a generator that only charges when the engine is running at higher rpms. The alternator also can support higher amperages that is needed in modern cars with lots of electronics. The alternator is also more reliable than a generator with far fewer failures. Most alternators have the voltage regulator built into the alternator unlike the generator that uses an external voltage regulator that fails quite often.
AC is preferred for power transmission because changing the voltage to a high value for transmission over a long distance, and then back down again for the users, is easy with a transformer. Transformers don't work with DC.

'Alternator' is simply another name for an a.c. generator.
It isn't. A DC generator is better if you want DC, but an AC generator is better if you want AC.
Shaft(rotor) of DC motor and Alternator(AC Generator) are alligned axially and radially to each other and connected.
It makes AC ( alternating current ) . That's why it's called an alternator. A DC generator would usually be called a dynamo.
There are two types of electrical generator. One is a dynamo, which produces d.c. The other is an alternator, which produces a.c.
Alternator and ac generator is equal
An ac generator produces ac, a dc generator produces dc, it all depends on the generator.
Turn the DC generator inside out and you have an alternator .
On an older model Volkswagen you would have a generator in stead of an alternator. The generator would give you DC.
Shaft(rotor) of DC motor and Alternator(AC Generator) are alligned axially and radially to each other and connected.
Because it produces alternating current which is then converted to DC
The method used in cars is to have a 3-phase generator or alternator which is turned by the engine. Six diodes in a full-wave rectifier connect the alternator directly to the car's battery.
It makes AC ( alternating current ) . That's why it's called an alternator. A DC generator would usually be called a dynamo.
It can be, however AC power is generally produced directly by an AC alternator/generator.
Alternator = AC electricity Generator = DC electricity
The Current in a automobile is DC, you have a battery which is dc, and your alternator produces ac current but converts it to DC inside the alternator unit which gives your battery DC power. So basically everything in your car is DC.
An alternator is just a small generator that generates AC power and is converted to 12v DC power via a transformer for battery storage and use.
A power switching circuit called an inverter. You could also use an electromechanical motor-generator: DC motor turning an alternator.
