Air bubbles in ice trap whatever was in the air at the time the ice froze. By looking at ice core samples, we can tell what the atmosphere was like thousands of years ago. There are also layers of volcanic ash that record eruption times. It is another form of reading years and what events, such as weather, occured in those years.

Glaciers are vital reserves of fresh water in arctic regions. They cover the land and trap a variety of gases (including methane) within them, limiting the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. They also protect the land underneath them from erosion by wind and flowing water, although the glaciers themselves are responsible for some erosion of the land they pass over.
