Bananas go through a unique process known as negative geotropism. Instead of continuing to grow towards the ground, they start to turn towards the sun. The fruit grows against gravity, giving the banana its familiar curved shape. So bananas developed a way of growing towards the light without destabilizing the plant.

The reason bananas are curved has to do with how they grow. Bananas grow in bunches known as "hands." As the bananas in a hand mature and grow larger, they eventually curve upwards so that instead of pointing towards the ground, they bend up and point towards the sky! The ability to do this is pretty neat, and it's known by the complicated-sounding term "negative geotropism." Most likely, the reason that bananas have evolved to have negative geotropism is that it allows them to reach out towards the sun and get more light!

Bananas are that way shaped because they are a cultivar bred for size and seedless fruit.

Wild bananas are difficult to peel, have many seeds, and were not readily edible unless cooked.

Bananas start off growing downward, but then turn toward the light causing their tips to bend upward. This and their increasing weight cause the stem to bend over so that the fruits point upward, explaining why the banana has a slightly curved shape.
