Best Answer

For most bears, they have to hibernate during winter. So, they store up a lot of fat in them, and survive off of their fat reserves as they sleep through the winter. If they were not to store up fat reservesm, and only eat enuogh to pass on one day's worth [or whatever] on, they'd have nothing in the fat reserves to survive the winters off on.

Because during the winter the bear does not want to wakeup and want food. So they get fat they store up on food and when they wakeup in spring they weigh less.

In the Arctic or Antarctic, probably on land. Polar bears and musk ox fit that description. Most marine mammals (in cold climates) have a thick layer of fat, but lack a thick layer of fur. However, the nine species of fur seals have thick fur.
