What do you mean? Do you mean why were they bred? If so, then mainly for two reasons: human enjoyment and hunting.
Domesticated breeds are, through selective breeding. Now if you're looking at evolutionary links, they all go as far as the timber wolf, still a canine. Is the timber wolf man made? no.
