There are a number of different types of species of organisms in an ecosystem in order for it to be functional and stable. Different organisms add species diversity which increases the stability of the ecosystem. Eg. the ecosystem such as a forest can quickly regenerate after a natural disturbance such as a fire.

Productivity depends on a number of factors, including (1) the total amount of sunlight the biome receives, (3) rainfall during the growing season, (2) temperature, (3) variability in climate, (4) number of species living there (more species means more productivity, all other things being equal), and may other factors. Since these factors vary across the earth, productivity varies too.

How does the extinction of various species results in a less diverse ecosystem?

The diversity of an ecosystem is how many different species (or types of organisms) there are. If a species becomes extinct, then there is 1 less species in that ecosystem and there is less diversity. If more than one species dies out, then the diversity is decreased by more than one organism.
