Elections are a normally a Democratic process.

This means that the electorate, or the group of enfranchised voters have the power to make changes based on a majority vote.

This could be something simple such as voting for the captain of a soccer team or electing a school captain; it may be a more important election such as a mayor, congressman or even president of a country.

There are obviously considerations, for example:

In the late 1800's elections were held for various things including positions of power, but women did not have the right to vote (that is to say they were disenfranchised); these forms of discrimination are still held today in many countries or societies, so not all elections are "free and fair".

Elections are based on majority decision, although this does not always mean that 51% is enough to constitute a win. In certain elections/ votes a 2/3 majority vote is required to constitute a win.
