We have a "democratic" government where everyone has "a say" in things. But there are so many of us that we can't each have "our say" and get anything done. So we have a representative government. We elect representatives to do our bidding. The elections allow us to "have our say" and the majority rules. There are a lot of ways to tear this down, but that's the bottom line.
Its important to have elections so that we can choose who we want to have power. If we didn't have elections we might not have anyone in power or we might have someone we don't want in power. We hold elections so we get a say, unlike Dictatorship in other nations. That's why we broke away from Britain and became America!
G4m3th30ry - There is ample evidence to support the idea that the more people in a society who are allowed to effect the leadership of that society, the freer and less encumbered by high taxes and corruption forced upon society.
In all societies, the ability to effect leadership is restricted to some degree. For instance, historically in the United States there were various restrictions: poll taxes, land ownership requirements, white males, and today age restrictions.
In Communist USSR, prior to the dissolution of most the Communist Regime, only those individuals who were party members could effect the country's leadership and admittance into the party was very selective and limited.
Looking at these two examples and including various societies with different restrictions on "voters", history shows the smaller the block of people able to affect their leaders as compared to the total number of individuals in a society, the more corruption will exist. This corruption is seen in giving special treatment and private benefits through government Fiat to those members who contributed to giving the leader power. Higher taxes are a natural consequence as most being taxed have no ability to affect leadership change.
Having said that, governmental control isn't evil by itself and pure democracy can still lead to tyranny. As there are no true democracies today as all systems are hybrids, it's an academic symbol, but true democracy is that 51% can jail 49% by simple vote.
This is why most systems, even in those countries with low incidents of corruption due to the high number of people who can affect the leader, are hybrid systems where "democracy" is tempered by various means. In the US, the Constitution limits what laws can be passed when those laws begin to interfere with basic rights. Theoretically, even if if 80% of the population wished jail the remaining 20% without cause, Constitutional limits would prevent that from happening.
Elections are one of the most necessary factor for democracy.
1. It helps us to keep a check on our leader in regular intervals.
2. It helps us to choose the most appropriate candidate for making decisions.
3. It is not physically possible for the whole population to sit together and make decisions.
4. Even if everyone sit together, they may not have required skill and knowledge to take the decisions.
5. Time is also required to take such decisions.
