I think the main purpose of movie genres is just to help people get an idea of what kind of movie it is before they watch it.
For example, say you're in the mood for a Horror movie. You spot The Shawshank Redemption in the video store, and you think that, since it's a Stephen King movie, it must be a horror movie. But it's not. The Shawshank Redemption is Drama.
But if you see that The Shawshank Redemption is in the Drama section, you'll know it's not the movie you want to see tonight.
