How does the discovery of Australian fossils contribute to our understanding about the evolution of species in Australia?

Fossils play a major role in the understanding of our current and past history of biota worldwide. From studying fossils, an placing them in chronological order, we are able to better determine what kind of living situations caused certain adaptations to occur within a certain species which result in the evolved fauna we have today, or the extinct animals we can study. A close study of Palaeontology can give us a much greater understanding as physical appearance and internal structure of the animal.

What are the living ancestors of dinosaurs?

There are no living direct ancestors of dinosaurs, but dinosaurs are a branch of reptilian life which are abundant today.

Why are fossils important to our understanding of geologic time?

Fossils, defined as the physical remains of past life, provide invaluable information to scientists. They not only provide a picture of a long-distant past, but also information that can be used to understand the evolution of today's plants and animals and clues for the future of our planet.

Why can trilobites be used as index fossils?

Trilobites: The Index Fossil There are many thousands of known species of trilobite fossils found worldwide. Trilobites are considered to be good index fossils because they evolved so rapidly, and this allows geologists the ability to date the rocks in which the trilobites are found. The discovery of trilobites is second only to the discovery of dinosaurs, and new species of trilobites are still being discovered today.

How do fossils show changes in related species?

Fossils are used to show changes because they are permanent. These fossils are also old and show evolutionary changes in species alive today.

Why do scientist think the dinosaurs went extinct?

One reason is that there were a lot of fossils in many layers of rock and then suddenly, there are a lot fewer. Also, there don't appear to be many dinosaurs alive today. So, they went extinct. Do you really mean "how" did the dinosaurs go extinct?

Did most fossils com from dinosaurs?

Fossils exist of nearly all formerly living organisms, with some exceptions, from single celled bacteria to the largest dinosaur. Marine organisms comprise the bulk of fossils that are easily available today.

Is there evidence that dinosaurs really did live?

Yes there is evidence of Mesozoic dinosaurs in the form of fossilised bones of hundreds of clades, ranging from embryos to adult, eggs, coprolites and trackways. There are dinosaurs living today, the birds which are theropod dinosaurs. There is overwhelming evidence that birds derived from dinosaurs. There are now many fossils that show many types dinosaurs had feathers.

Could you find d.n.a from dinosaurs?

The non avian dinosaur fossils are so old that no DNA is left. Therefor, you can't find the DNA from non avian dinosaurs. However, birds, which are considered dinosaurs, exist today and it isn't hard to get bird DNA.

Why is studying fossils of ancient times important?

What evidence do you have that dinosaurs lived during the same time as people?

On the contrary, all the evidence shows that, excluding birds, all dinosaurs died out long before people evolved. Dinosaur fossils date to 65.5 million years ago or later, and human fossils date to less than 2.3 million years ago. However, if you count birds as dinosaurs, then the proof is that they're still here today.

Did sturgeons live when dinosaurs were alive?

True sturgeon evolved early in the Cretaceous. They have barely changed since then, making them living fossils. Today, however, many are threatened by humans.
