It uses its feet, but the actual method depends on the type of hawk and the type of prey. For example, a Harris hawk kills a mouse by instantly crushing it with the great strength of its grip, whereas the same bird would kill a rabbit by tearing it open with its talons. The beak, which looks fearsome, is generally only used for tearing up flesh of a creature which is already dead, i.e. it is not a weapon. Falcons (as opposed to hawks) operate rather differently: a peregrine often stoops (a specialised type of high speed dive) on its prey at speeds of 200 mph or more, and strikes it with its rear talon. This frequently causes instant death, although the falcon may well be travelling so fast that it cannot hang on to the quarry but has to circle back and grab it either from mid-air or after it falls to the ground.
