Lab reports are written in order to ensure consistency and a standard if the experiments or processes in the lab are to be repeated, as well such records have a greater ability to lead to other infrences and modifications on what is in said reports.

It works similar to records of old court rulings and how lawyers will often use these as reference in order to aid an argument or infrence, but with scientific hypothesis, evidence and theory.
