Best Answer

Leaves are usually broad, thin, and flat to increase surface area for photosynthesis. The wider the leaf is, the more spots there are for photosynthesis to take place.

This is only my thoughts as I haven't found the answer on the internet. I think that a leaf is thin to maximize the surface area so that more energy from the sun can get onto the leaf and it will be able to photosynthesise better.

The advantages to a flat thin leafs blade is that the green chlorophyll has more exposed surface area to absorb sunlight and allows for photosynthesis to take place and more progressively than in smaller leaves with less surface area.

This is only in certain areas of the world. The broad leaves are to catch water, and they are thin because when they absorb that water, they don't want to be weighed down by it.
