They're afraid of humans in the sense that they will avoid humans as much as possible during the best of times. During the rut and when a cow has her calves with her, that's a different story. But a moose will act in the same way during those same times to other predatory animals like bears, wolves, coyotes and mountain lions. They know that humans are predators too; they know what it means when it sees an animal with forward-facing eyes.

Indeed moose are dangerous animals, more dangerous than a bear when cornered, but that doesn't mean they aren't scared of humans. Moose may wander into a residential area, but does that mean it's unafraid of people? Not exactly, especially when fish and wildlife officers have to try to corner it to tranquilize it and move it to a safe, more natural location. A moose will run away--yes, in fear--when it knows it's in the vicinity of humans via sight, smell and sound.
