When the national park movement began, many of the first national parks were set aside in pristine wilderness areas, and most of those areas were in unsettled places in the west. It was relatively easy to set aside large areas of land because few people lived in those areas compared with the east.
It was much more controversial when national parks were established in the east, such as Shenandoah National Park, which forced many people already living there out of their homes.
