As with any job; people get paid different amounts. Not all movies stars were paid a lot of money. Some were barely paid anything at all and may not receive any additional payment from continued sales, it all just depends on their contract.
Even if an actor were paid a large amount of money, that doesn't mean they were careful with their money. Some simply spend it as fast as they can get it, and never plan for the future. For child stars it may not even be under their control, many parents have wasted a child actors fortune and left them penniless upon reaching adulthood.
Out of all the people who become actors and movie stars, only a few reach a level of truly rich; and not all of them manage to keep their money. The same can be said for most industries.
