Oxygen masks are needed at higher altitude because the air is less dense, therefore less air molecules are getting into your lungs when you breath.

They have oxygen tanks attachted to there backs which have pipes with masks on the end which the astronauts keep on there face.

What would happen if you tried to light matches in the International Space Station?

Think. When you light a match. fire occurs. For fire to breath it needs oxygen(air). Is there oxygen in the International Space Station? Is the International Space Station in space? Is there air in Space? If you look at the pictures of the interior if the ISS, the astronauts do not wear oxtgen masks, so yes, there must be oxygen in the ISS, and therefore matches should light. What i want to know is that because of the lack of gravity, does the flame extend in all directions, or does the hot air (i.e. flame) still rise as on earth?

Why can't we see the stars when we are facing the sun?

Sunlight scattered by the atmosphere masks the much dimmer light from the stars.

How do airplanes protect people from the decreased air pressure when flying at high elevations?

When flying at hight altitudes (+12,000FT) planes pressurize the cabin so passengers can stay conscious without wearing oxygen masks.

Why do you have oxygen masks on airplanes?

On airliners its because you're flying at very high altitudes which means there is very little oxygen and if one of the windows are broken that air will come so if you don't have the oxygen masks you'll die from lack of oxygen in case of an emergency like there is a gas leak, or there are toxic fumes released into the air, or if the plane is about to crash and people start to panic

What precautions do pilots have to take if they fly above 45000 m?

Precautions when flying at high altitudes would be a pressure suit and oxygen /masks. But civilian flights do not ascend over 43,000 feet in the US.

Why are airplanes pressurised?

Modern airliners and aircraft that fly above 15,000 feet are required to be pressurized because the oxygen levels at such high altitudes are not sufficient for the human body's needs. If much time is spent above these altitudes without pressurization or supplemental oxygen, hypoxia can result. The symptoms of hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, include nausea, discoloration, disorientation, and severe headaches. Not all airplanes are pressurized, however. Pressurization is limited to airliners, private jets, expensive personal aircaft, and high-altitude military aircraft. An alternative to pressurization is supplemental oxygen masks connected to oxygen tanks somewhere in the aircraft. Pilots are required to wear oxygen masks when flying above 12,500 feet for any longer than 30 minutes. At 14,000 feet, pilots are required to use supplemental oxygen at all times. At 15,000 feet, everyone on board must have supplemental oxygen.

Why do sick or injured people wear oxygen masks?

The more oxygen the get the faster it diffusses to the cells.

How do passengers on an airplane survive the extremely low air pressure at high altitudes?

In short they don't. Small light unpressurised aircraft fly relatively low, so the air pressure is acceptable. Large aircraft (heavy jets etc) use a pressurised hull, air is pumped into the cabin which is kept at an acceptable density. This is why you hear about explosive decompression, and why aircraft flying at high altitude have oxygen masks which drop from the cabin roof for each passenger in the event of decompression. Without them you would die of oxygen starvation.

What were the uses of scrap rubber during World War 2?

Tires for trucks and planes soles for shoes gas masks and oxygen masks

What stops F16 pilots from blacking out when attempting maneuvers?

Pressurized suits and oxygen masks are what keep F16 pilots from blacking out; this is most notable when they are attempting G force maneuvers. Commercial pilots never have to worry about this because they are not climbing to the altitudes that combat pilots are nor are they clocking the same speeds.
