∙ 12y agoIt is difficult for government to cut spending because our governmental structures are overwhelmingly support a plural model of democracy. A plural model means that there are a myriad of access points to influence the direction of government; groups that use these access points are known as interest groups, commonly referred to as special interests or lobbyists. Knowing this, there is usually at least one interest group on each side of any given issue attempting to sway gov't to favor their positions. This makes it difficult for government to cut spending because cutting spending in an area upsets these groups that are pivitol to their re-election campaigns, therefore compelling the elected official to oppose cuts in that area.

Government spending is one of four components of aggregate demand (demand of the entire economy), the other three being Consumption, Investment, and Net exports. Decreasing spending, decreases demand, which will decrease real GDP and increase unemployment. Basically, it won't be good for our economy because more people will be unemployed.
