Pets are primarily the domain of the Hunter and Warlock class, and in a lesser way the Death Knight and Mage classes.
For Hunters and Warlocks, their pets can serve many roles, whether to deal damage or prevent enemies from attacking the player. This of course has great uses while leveling. In group-play, such as dungeons and raids, the pets also provide beneficial effects to your group.
Death Knight and Mage pets, as well as the short-duration guardians like Fire Elementals and Spirit Wolves, are more for increasing damage and add less to the overall feel of a class.
