The very first astronomers merely looked at night at the stars. They noticed that almost all the stars circled the north star (Polaris) during the night (this is due to the Earth's rotation). Some of the stars seemed to be moving differently, with paths of their own, these were not stars, but were planets.
Most of the lights in the sky appear to be in fixed positions in the sky. In fact, up until the time of Copernicus, many scientists thought that the stars were fixed to a crystal sphere which rotated around the earth.
The problem was that there were just a few of the lights in the sky that moved around. They were called "wanderers", or "planets".
All of the stars in the night sky stay fixed, relative to each other. The planets are all moving around the sun at different rates, so they are not fixed against the stars - they appear to wander over time.
Whereas the stars seem relatively stationary in the sky, the planets, being a lot closer to us, appear to move across the sky as they follow their orbits around the Sun. For that reason they are known as wanderers.
Planets are called wanderers because the name planet means wanderer Planets are called wanderers because the name planet means wanderer
they called the planets wanderers because the new ones didnt know why they were here and the plants that were already there were wondering why they were here
They called them πλανήτες (planites/ planets). This is were the name planet derives.
Because they move relative to the background stars.
Because the planets wander around among the 'fixed' stars.
It’s a Greek origin they named it as wandering stars because they appeared star like and moved relative to stars here and there.
the Greeks called the planets wanderers
In a sense. The work planet comes from a Greek word meaning "wandering star."
the planets jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune are the larger planets. They are also called jovian/giant planets.
The inner planets, also known as rocky or terrestrial planets, do not have significant ring systems.
The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Because of the most part, they have rocky terrain, they are also called Terrestrial Planets.

Planets; from 'Planetes,' or 'Wanderers.'
the planets, the word planet comes from the latin word wanderer
They observed that all the stars seemed to stay still relative to each other except a small group of stars they called 'planets' the Greek for 'wanderers'. Later it was discovered that the Planets were entirely unrelated to stars and much, much closer.
Because the ancient Greek astronomers were one of the first astronomers to discover the planets. As they looked at the planets over time they moved into different places. The planets seemed o orbit the Sun so the Greek astronomers called them planets, which meant :wanderers.
The ancient Greeks called planets 'wanderers' because they appear to move through ther skies in relation to the 'fixed' stars. The apparent movement is because the planets are much closer to the Earth than the stars, and all planets rotate around the Sun, thus all move in relation to each other.
They are also referred to as the outer planets.
