There are only nine species of around fifty known species of rabbits that are endangered.

Rabbits are normally difficult to completely eradicate because of their breeding habits, hence the term "humping like rabbits".

These endangered rabbits are mostly threatened by deforestation and habitat loss for human expansion and agriculture. They are also frequenty hunted for food and sport.

The endangered rabbit species:

- Volcano Rabbit

These high-altitude rabbits are endangered due to their habitat changing, making it difficult to find food and shelter.

- Amami Rabbit

A primitive rabbit, one of the oldest species known. Deforestation is causing their population to drop dangerously.

- Riverine Rabbit

Huge drop in population due to deforestation for agriculture. They are also being killed by farmers to defend crops, hunted for food and accidently caught in traps meant for larger pests.

- Assam Rabbit

Endangered due to logging and human development across their habitats.

- Tehuantepec Jackrabbit

These rabbits are endangered due to hunting and human agricultural expansion over their habitats. Many are also killed in human-induced fires, which are used to clear the land for human development.

- Tres Marias Cottontail

These rabbits are naturally a brave species that do not have a fear of humans, due to their lack of natural predators. However this trait is to blame for them being endangered because they are too easy to hunt. When rats were brought to their island habitat by humans via ships, many of the rabbits died of diseases they were not immune to.

- Omilteme Cottontail

These are endangered due to deforestation and logging reducing their shelter and food.

- San Jose Brush Rabbit

These are endangered mostly due to poaching, despite being harshly protected by Mexican law.

They are also being driven from their habitats by human development, which contributes to their declining populations. But the main cause is illegal poaching.

- Robust Cottontail

This species became endangered as a result of a long-term drought in their natural habitat.

However even with the drought over, they are still facing threat from urbanisation, brush clearing and cattle grazing.

More information about these species is in the related links below.

Yes humans are a threat to rabbits. Just like we are to any other animal! We take away their homes and replace them with parking spaces, homes, stores, and other things. Some of us even poach them. If we acted like this to you would we be a threat?

Rabbits are being endangered because of people killing them out of season. These people are known as poachers. Also foxes and other animals are being killed out of season. Personally, I don't think rabbit are endangered.
