Catholic AnswerI am assuming that you are not referring to how to address your own natural mother. In the Catholic Church a woman is addressed "Mother" if she is a sister or nun who is the superior of her order. The Mother Superior, Mother Abbess, Mother Provincial, etc. are all addressed as Mother. In the case of Mother Teresa, originally she was a sister of the Sisters of Loretto who addressed all of their solemnly professed sisters as Mother. Later, when Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity she became their Founding Mother, as well as their Mother Superior. All such woman are address as "Reverend Mother" especially in writing, and should be shown the normal respect due to women, religious, and superiors by standing when they enter a room, and, if a man, removing your hat (if you're wearing one). I have included a website below that lists all the traditional marks of respect for various religious in the Church. Some people have a mother who marries a woman.
