Space shuttles are rockets, however they were intended to be mostly reusable while other rockets are totally disposable.

However the space shuttle is no longer being used: the design is considered obsolete, equipment was aging and deteriorating faster than expected, and they were no longer considered safe to continue flying.

How did the International Space Station get to space?

The space station, now weighing several tons, did not get up there in one launch. U.S. space shuttles and Russian, Canadian, and Japanese rockets brought pods. These smaller sections were peiced togather in orbit until you have what hangs over our heads today. -Jack

What did Robert Goddard invent that made space flight possible?

Goddard received over 200 patents, but the two most important for space travel were liquid fuel rockets and two-stage rockets. Without these two ideas, space travel would never have happened.

How long does it take to get to Uranus from earth with a space shuttle?

Space shuttles are not equipped to go on long distance voyages, nor can they hold enough fuel. shuttles are mostly used for travel to and from the International Space Station and low earth orbit. If you had an infinite supply of fuel and you could just rocket in a strait path while Uranus is at the closest point in its orbit it would only take a bit over a year. Unfortunately, you have to factor in the gravitational pull of surrounding bodies and as previously stated the limited amount of fuel. so it would be much much longer.

How fast can a space shuttle fly?

The speed of flight really depends on what you mean by 'flight'. The shuttle can reach over 1700 mph, but not all that is provided by the shuttle engines. The initial 3000 mph are supplied by the booster rockets.

How was the Hubble Telescope transported into orbit?

HST was transported into orbit aboard Space Shuttle Discovery (mission STS-31) in April 1990. It was scheduled to be orbited earlier, but the shutdown of the Shuttle program following the Challenger accident delayed its deployment, not to mention increasing its maintenance cost because it sat on the ground (about 1 million per day). Astronauts successfully deployed and boosted HST into its orbit altitude of 569nm.Though any of the Shuttles can perform an HST Servicing Mission, Shuttles Discovery and Endeavour are usually preferred due to their larger payload bays (we can put more stuff in it).To date, HST has been in orbit and providing science data for over 20 years.

What are five Space Shuttles that crashed?

None crashed they broke apart and there were only two Space Shuttles that did so. Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart on take-off over the Atlantic Ocean in 1986 and Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry over East Texas in 2003.

What are some launch sites and various landing sites for space shuffle?

The only launch site for the Space Shuttles was Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. This was also the preferred landing site. However, other landing sites were Edwards Air Force Base in California, White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico, and many others all over the world.

Who were the austronauts that were in the space shuttle with her?

There are/were 5 space shuttles and over 100 missions as well as one other shuttle that only flew in the atmosphere as a test of the flight capability. Many people have ridden on the space shuttle.

How have rockets improved and changed over time?

Since the earliest days of discovery and experimentation, rockets have evolved from simple gunpowder devices into giant vehicles capable of traveling into outer space. Rockets have opened the universe to direct exploration by humankind.

Are rockets being used today?

This current day? What sort of rocket do you mean? If you mean a major rocket launch, no. If you mean over a large period of time, yes rockets are used for launching satellites and space station ships etc.

How do space shuttles operate?

The space shuttles were launched by liquid fuel engines along with solid fuel boosters to get them into orbit. That also provided the initial speed of over 17,000 mph that keeps them orbit without any additional use of the engines. Once in orbit they used orbital maneuvering engines to change their orientation as well provide the slow down required to bring them back to Earth.
