I'm assuming by "they" you mean blacks? If so, drums are used for many things.
They use drumming as an emergency call if anyone was in danger, used for ceremonies, rites of passage etc. I don't' know much other than that but I'll edit my answer as i find out more. keeping a beat when you cant count.
I might be wrong, but I believe that "talking drums" did exactly what they say: They were drums used to communicate over long distances, having large cavities and resonating particularly well.
Its important because the African citizens use it in everyday life. For example, weddings, naming ceremonies and even when people are ill. They believe that "it heals" so they use that technique. Also they use them for festivals... So as you can see they use them for many different things in life.
