When a statue falls forward, the nose is the first point to hit the ground. Broken noses are often found on ancient Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Southeast Asian statues. But archaeologists in Egypt have also found mutilated statues upright in sealed tombs, showing evidence of deliberate disfiguration with a hammer and chisel. Such mutilation reflects the function of Egyptian art. The Egyptians believed that tomb statues could be transformed into living beings through a funerary ritual called the Opening of the Mouth Ceremony. A "living" statue served as an eternal home for the deceased's soul, and smashing its nose effectively "killed" the statue and the soul of the deceased. Statues' noses were probably sometimes broken by those who wished to defeat or harm the individual represented.

LIES & DECEIT! You guys probably wont approve this answer because its TRUTH but the caucasian/white invaders/conquerors and forces of certain organizations didnt want the truth to eb known that Egyptians were Black good ole slave in the cotton field black. There is no way that they had pointy noses and admitting that they were black would be admitting that current day Blacks descended were first most technolically/mathematically and socially advanced and rich society and would run afoul to the perception of lowlings that they have been given today.

No, Egyptans were not black Africans, no matter afrocentric people might want to think, and cry: "conspiracy!" Egyptians were light skinned, it shows in every ancient Egyptian colour mural we have found. Nubians were always painted much darker, black colour when Egyptians were painted with much lighter mediterranean skin. Some other people's were painted with even lighter colour, but Egyptians were certainly not black. Also all the statues which have noses left, have straight noses, as well as the colours found in the statues are for light skin also. The noses really are broken purposedly, but in ancient times, and for to "kill" ritually the statue and the soul of the depicted human. Some noses are also just broken throughout history accidentally. None of them are broken because they should supposedly depict black African features. Wouldn't you see the features in other face parts too, like lips etc? And why are many noses in Greek and Roman statues broken too, and Native American and Chinese? Because of accidents.

If you want to feel proud that you are black, read the chapter of Egypts history, when Kushites (Nubians) ruled Egypt, the 25th dynasty. There are also many other ancient and medieval African kingdoms for you to study, but don't start to distort the history claiming that Egyptians would have been black when they were not.

I believe it is because the nose is a weak point in the statue's integrity and easily broken to deface the piece that could otherwise not be destroyed.

What are characteristics of early greek sculpture?

Greek statues are so admired because the sculptors who made them tried to make them look perfect. They wanted their statues to show how beautiful people could be. To improve their art, these sculptors carefully studied the human body, especially how it looked when it was moving. Then, using what they had learned, they carved stone and marble statues. As a result, many Greek statues look as though they could come to life at any moment. Hoped that helped! Most of their statues' noses have worn down or crumbled off over all this time as well.

Why are the noses on old statues often destroyed?

The noses on old statues are often destroyed because they are delicate and protrude from the face, making them vulnerable to damage from natural wear and tear, theft, or vandalism over time.
