What our eyes see as light is actually called "Electromagnetic Radiation". The energy emitted by a light source behaves like a wave as it travels through space. These waves have different lengths. We perceive these different wavelengths as different colors. What we see as "white light" is actually a combination of lights of different wavelengths/colors. The light from our sun is one example of a white light source. Passing light through a prism splits it, through a process know as refraction, into it's component colors. In the case of rainbows, the prisms are droplets of water suspended in the air. Light bends as it enters and exits the prism. Shorter wavelengths are bend more, longer wavelengths are bent less, causing them fan out in the familiar color pattern:

Red (760-620 nm)

Orange (620-590 nm)

Yellow (590-570 nm)

Green (570-495 nm)

Blue (495-476 nm)

Indigo (475-450 nm)

Violet (450-380 nm)

The elementary particle of electromagnetic radiation is called a photon. Photons have no mass and no electrical charge. Therefore, it is incorrect to refer to them as being arranged by their charge. You could say they are arranged according to the charge of the source that emitted them, but that's just a long way of saying "They're arranged by wavelength."

The colors of visible light are arranged in order from longest wavelength to shortest wavelength. Red has the shortest, and violet the longest, and the other colors fall in between.
Infrared radiation lies just below red on the electromagnetic spectrum, and ultraviolet lies just above violet.

I love questions like this. They drive teachers nuts, but point the way to greater understanding. The arrangement of the spectral colors are determined by how the human eye and brain work. There is no clear reason to believe that different people or animals see the spectrum the same. In fact it is easy to show that they don't. When I was a teenager I read a scifi book where a boy found a crashed flying saucer. He went into it and saw a primary color never before seen on Earth. I was charmed by this idea, but only years later learned why this was unlikely to be possible. ----

No physics expert speaking here, but shouldn't the answer include the fact that they are not discrete colors but a continuous gradient and that one blends into the next by the addition of one hue and the subtraction of another? and that red blends back into violet in the same way? and that this is the order they come in when a prism separates the light into colors (since we are not sure if the questioner is asking why light breaks up that way or just why we represent it that way)?

They are in that order because the prism breaks the white light by wavelength. The longer waves, the least bent, to the shorter waves, the most bent, always go in that order. Red to Violet. It is simply that, the length of the wave.

It has to do with science. They way light reflects of things. For instance, take a prism and put it next to a window when it is sunny out. You will see the rainbow create on your wall.
