The Kelvin scale is a thermodynamic absolute temperature scale referenced to absolute zero, the theoretical absence of all thermal energy.

First of all, you have to understand that it's not possible to keep making something
colder and colder forever. There is such a thing as the coldest possible temperature.
It has nothing to do with technology. It's a law of nature. It's the temperature where
all of the heat has been removed from matter, and the molecules completely stop
their jiggling. A gas at that temperature, if it were possible, would have no pressure,
and practically no volume, and would just lay there, because its molecules would have
no kinetic energy to fly around with.

We call that temperature "Absolute Zero", because no lower temperature can exist,
and we know exactly what temperature it is: It's negative 459.67° Fahrenheit, or
negative 273.15° Celsius.

The rest of the answer is simple: In scientific labs where they work with low- temperature
stuff every day, it gets to be a pain to work with the Fahrenheit or Celsius temperatures.
It's much easier to just have a temperature scale that starts at the place where ALL
temperatures start ... at Absolute Zero.

And that's exactly what the Kelvin scale is. Zero Kelvin is Absolute Zero. It counts up
from there with degrees that are the same size as Celsius degrees, so when it gets to
273.15, it's at the same temperature as 0° Celsius, and ice melts.

That's why there are no negative temperatures on the Kelvin scale: It's a law of nature
that there IS no temperature lower than zero Kelvin. Scientists knew where the bottom
limit is in nature, and that's where they put zero Kelvin.

And now, at no extra cost, a Factoid:
The temperature in outer space, in the shade, where no stars are shining on you,
is 2.7 Kelvin. It used to be much higher, but has been cooling off steadily since the
Big Bang.

You can go no lower than 0 degrees Kelvin. This was set at the temperature of "absolute zero" which is the coldest anything can possibly be. At this temperature all motion ceases (atoms no longer vibrate).
