On clear nights, water vapor will condense and form dew as the
temperature drops overnight. When the sun is shining again in the
morning, some solar energy will be used to evaporate the dew. On a
cloudy night, the clouds prevent the heat loss that leads to the
normal overnight temperature drop, so dew does not form. Thus the
morning after a cloudy night, all of the solar energy will contribute
to air temperature since there is no dew to evaporate.
Clouds act like insulation for the radiant heat of the earth. So when there are no clouds, the radiant heat leaves the atmosphere and escapes into space.
