Wolves, like all predators, keep prey (especially herbivore) populations in check. Controlling herbivores (that is, keeping their population within an ideal range) helps to keep vegetation well-managed and sustainable.
Wolves kill sick elk and deer, keeping deaseses from spreading in the herd. They also eat annoying bugs and squirrels. And wolves prevent the overeating of plants by deer and elk, letting trees grow and beavers and birds have a home.
Wolves hunt to eat, but they only bring down animals that are sick, injured, very old, or very young - all in all, the unwanted and unneeded of the herds. By weeding these animals out, they are improving the food chain by allowing the strong animals that are needed for strong, healthy offspring, to survive.
Farmers and poachers hunt and kill wolves for their fur and because they are feared by farmers cause the farmers do not want the wolves to be around since when prey is low, the wolves attack livestock. It's almost always humans who are the one who endanger wild animals.
Wolves can be omnivores or carnivores, but it depends on which wolf species. Some species like grey wolves, arctic wolves, etc. are omnivores. Some species like red wolves, brown wolves, black wolves, etc. are carnivores. Some wolves are omnivores and some are carnivores, and it depends on which wolf species it is. Smaller wolves with brighter colors are typically omnivores, while bigger wolves with darker colors are typically carnivores. "Carnivore" means than an animal's diet primarily consists of meat, but not completely, and some carnivores might in a happenstance eat some plants, especially if they're careless or if they're starving.
