Because they help control the grass by eating it, and they are prey.... So if zebras were gone then their prey would either go extinct, or eat other animals and make the other animals go extinct. So you see, all animals have a purpose.

Zebras have black and white stripes. When they are being stalked, they run together in a group, and the stripes confuse the stalking animal. The stalking animal cannot distinguish between zebras because of the constant motion of the stripes. While the stalking animal tries to decide what to do, the zebras have time to get away together.

If you try to follow stripes on a pinwheel as it turns, you'll get an idea of why zebra stripes make a stalking animal confused.
