The Gospel According to St. Matthew tells of wise men (actually magi: Zoroastrian priests) who came to see the baby Jesus. (Modern tradition and nativity plays often translate the magi as kings.) This account is not in the Gospel According to St. Luke, which records a visit by shepherds instead.

There are many differences between the nativity accounts in Matthew and Luke, only one of which is the story of the magi. For example, in Matthew, the angel appeared to Joseph and told him that a son would be born, whereas in Luke, the angel appeared to Mary and told her that she would have a son. . After Jesus was born, Matthew says that his family fled to Egypt to escape Herod, who killed all the infants in an attempt to kill Jesus, whereas Luke says that they took Jesus to Jerusalem to Jerusalem to be circumcised and then returned peacefully to Galilee.

Neither author had been present at the time of these events, but Christians no doubt sought to know more about the early life of Jesus. Matthew and Luke provided s, but from very limited information.

There are a great many differences between the various Gospel accounts. The various authors had their different styles, different purposes, and different target audiences. There is no reason why any particular account or detail needed to be included or excluded. So there is no way it can be determined why this particular detail was omitted. It may be Luke did not know of it, but this is not proven by it being omitted. Luke knew a lot of details about Jesus' early life which others did not record, so it is quite feasible he knew about it, especially since he wrote an account 'in order' and would have wanted to know all the chronological details from his various sources for his work.

According to Luke's gospel the Magi visited the baby Jesus?

Actually, the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus is not recorded in Luke's gospel but in the Gospel of Matthew. The story can be found in Matthew 2:1-12. Luke's gospel includes the nativity story, but it focuses more on the shepherds who visited Jesus after his birth.

Why does Matthew not mention the shepherds in Luke chapter 2?

The nativity accounts in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke are entirely different from each other, and John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus), says that neither of the nativity stories contains any historical truth. Matthew's Gospel was written before that of Luke, so its author could have known nothing of what would be written in Luke as few years later.

What happened in Luke's version of the nativity?

Luke's version is the more, well, popular version. For excample: this version included the manger, shephers, magi, and so on.Mathew's version took place in Mathew's home.and the magi and shepherds did not come.so think of it this way: Luke's gospel is more of the traveling and scene, when Mathew's is like the dreams, and home.
