Why couldn't Harry Potter see Thestrals through books 1-4 even though he had seen his mother die?

Not everyone becomes a ghost. And for this reason not all of those that have died in Harry Potter can be seen as ghosts. In fact none of the characters that the reader sees die actually become ghosts.

∙ 9y agoHarry only saw the murder of one parent, his mother. But he was only one year old at the time and incapable of processing what he had witnessed. To see Thestrals you have to not only see the death, but process it. This is why Harry couldn't see the Thestrals at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
