neutral safety switch
any auto transmission car that starts in neutral and not in park has a problem with the safety switch. Fix it or bypass it.
Likely something is wrong with the connection with your brake. You have to press the brake to get it out of park (safety feature so kids etc can't shift into gear), if you start it in neutral you have already bypassed that safety feature. I'm currently having the same problem and is why I signed onto this website. Check to see if your brake lights work. It might be a blown fuse, loose wire going from the brake to steering column, or similar electrical problem. I haven't figured out what mine is yet, but it works fine as long as I start it in neutral instead of park.
Check fuse for stop lights same circuit for shift interlock or turn key to 1st position (unlock) and move shift lever to neutral to start

To test the neutral safety switch on a 1997 Dodge Caravan, first ensure the vehicle is in park or neutral. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the switch terminals while moving the gear lever through the positions. If there is no continuity in park or neutral, the switch may be faulty and should be replaced. Additionally, inspect the wiring and connectors for any damage or corrosion.
