Stars work on nuclear fusion not fission. When enough material accretes, gravity compresses and heats the material to begin stellar formation. At some point, with enough material and heat, fusion will begin.

when the sun started forming it collected dust and gas. Soon it obtained its own gravity. It pulled more and more gas and dust together eventually pressuring the middle and so it heated up and eventually heated up to the temperature of 10 million degrees kelvin and causes nuclear fusion.

Once a star stars nuclear fusion it becomes a T Tauri Star. What it goes on to become is dependant upon the available gases of the cloud that surrounds it and what it can draw in. But yes, the nuclear fusion that initiates this occurs inside a Protostar.
