Why were two Olympic Flames burning instead of one during the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid?

Not certain on the exact answer, but back in the 1952 Oslo Olympics a flame was lit in the town of Morgedal, Norway (the Nordic flame). It was this flame that lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony. This event also occurred prior to the 1980 Olympics (Lake Placid) and also before the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer). However at the 1994 Olympics the Nordic flame was combined with the Olympic flame and lit the Olympic cauldron. So at the 1980 Winter Olympics they may have used these two flames to light separate cauldrons persumably as a symbolic act of rememberance to the Nordic games which pre-dated the Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympic flame in 1952 (Italy) was lit from the eternal flame in Rome. Since 1994 only the Olympic flame has been used in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics mainly due to the fact that the Olympic relays have gone straight from Greece to the host country.

Has the Olympic flame ever burnt out?

Yes, if you are speaking about the flame that the Torchbearers are carrying. This is lit from the cauldron in Greece and next progresses on the relay. If by chance the flames goes out due to wind, stumble or ? there is always a backup flame (usually carried next to the Torchbearer) to relight the flame. Typically an Olympic Torch Relay representative is nearby in case this happens.

What is torch relay?

Well, first of all the Olympics are an international sporting event that has been around since 776 BC! The Olympic flame is lit by reflecting the rays of the sun off a parabolic mirror onto a torch a few weeks before each Games. It's been all over the world and really is one of the best things that unites the world as it symbolizes the Olympics and represents peace, unity, friendship, and brotherhood. The torch relay is where people, also known as torchbearers, carry the Olympic flame by torch through the country that is hosting the Olympics. The flame travels from Greece to the host country, then travels around the country ending its journey when the Olympic cauldron is lit during the opening ceremony, and it stays lit until the closing ceremony. hope that helped :) anymore questipon just let me know :)
