Why can't Sonic the Hedgehog swim?

when sonic first went in water these things on his arms popped and he almost sunk his mum got him out and that's all i think he should go to the swimming lessons!

He is absolutely TERRIFIED of water. Most hedgehogs cant swim but sonic just hates it as a 15 year old it can be quite embarsing so sonic genrally only keeps it to himself. He hates getting wet and when he is in the water he falls to the bottom like a stone.

As Sonic is unable to swim, he is at the very least wary of water. It can be assumed that Sonic is afraid of water due to numerous character profiles saying so, as well as Sonic's reaction to landing, or the possibility of landing, in water.

Yuji Naka admitted he made a mistake in thinking that hedgehogs could not swim when creating Sonic.
