Clutch needs adjusting, or synchro going out
Take it to get the gearbox replaced.
There is a lever beside the gear shift when your moving or stoped you just have to pull it up. If you do it when your moving beshore to let off the gass and not spinning don't hit the brake all the wheels have to be moving at the same speed.
My 1999 Jeep Wrangler also pops out of 1st gear once in awhile. From what I have gathered it could be worn out linkage, a worn out syncronizer & springs, rubber transmission mount, or a worn out 1st gear itself. (Good time to also check the clutch friction disk). I changed out first gear on a British Triumph Sports car years ago, but don't really want to on the jeep .... George B.
it is probably that your shift lever bushings have worn out, but check the rubber seals and carpeting, sometimes they put pressure against the shifter making it pop out of gear.
on the front axle there is a plate between two bolts on the differential cover. the first 3 numbers are the gear ratio. example 4 1 0 = 4.10

My jeep wrangler keeps loking in gears
there were no 1996 jeep wranglers
There is no 5th gear overdrive, only 4th gear
If a 2000 Jeep Wrangler suddenly loses power in 5th gear, it might be a problem with the speed sensor on the transmission. This sensor regulates when the Jeep will shift or should shift.
