It is rare for people to drown in the Dead Sea - but it does happen sometimes. Because of the extremely high amount of salt in the water, it's impossible to swim (as we know it); if you try, you just kinda bob up to the surface of the water again and float.

The water may look clear and clean to swim in, but do not be deceived, and do not jump in and splash around. And do not, under any circumstances, dive in.

What causes some of the drownings in the Dead Sea is the panic that results if you get too much water in your eyes (be warned: this burns 'n stings like crazy).

I suppose you can, but you'll get popped back to the surface like a cork. The Dead Sea is so buoyant that you don't swim in it - you actually swim on it.

It's impossible to sink in the Dead Sea. There is too much salt (1.24kg per litre), and it keeps you afloat.

Like a stone. It is the Dead Sea, north of the Red Sea, that has such a high salt content that it will keep you afloat.

Anything with a density of more than 1.24 g/cm3 will sink

in the hypersalinity of the Dead Sea.

This contrasts with the figure of 1.00 for fresh water.

Where is the dead sea and why don't people sink in it?

The dead sea is not called the dead sea because people sink in it and die, it's called that because there is no water flow, and no creatures swim in it. That is why it is called the dead sea. It doesn't seem to exist, it's like it is dead.

In fact the level of salt in water causes the opposite. The higher the salt content, the less likely you are to sink. The Dead sea is my example for this.
