My 99 c230 check engine light came on and I finally got a code reader to read the fault codes. Basically the check engine lights usually means something is wrong with the emissions control system. Mine was a mass airflow sensor. Once it was replaced I drove the car 25 miles, stopped and restarted a few times and the check engine light cleared. The MAF is available on line. Usually from 45 to 270 bucks, Over 450 at a MBZ dealer. The MAF is in a plastic tube between the air filter and the fuel injector trhrottle body. Not very difficult to remove/replace.

AnswerWell, I don't know how much my Chevy has in common with your Mercedes - but My check engine light kept going on and luckily I took it to an honest mechanic... He only charged me $50 to change the gas cap... Yes, that's all that was wrong and it registered as an "emissions control system error". He charged me for the diagnostic and doing a basic check on the car. A dishonest mechanic could have soaked me for a lot more.

There's a reason the mechanics call them "idiot" lights.
