∙ 12y agoDoctor-patient confidentiality is very important, for example if you contracted an infectious disease from having an affair and cheating on your wife. You wouldn't want your wife to know that, but the doctor needs to know that to treat you. This example isn't very morally based, but you get the idea.

∙ 6y agoPrivacy and Confidentiality are two cornerstone principles in health care. First, patients need to feel their information is protected, so they can trust and be honest with a doctor. Second, patient's illness OR health is no one's business.
As an example, pre-1980s, newspapers regularly printed Admissions to and Discharges from Hospitals. So a list might have read:
Mr. Steven Whoever, bladder surgery
Mrs. Carolina M. Somebody, childbirth
Newspapers did not think about embarrassing problems, or private issues. For example, the newspaper did not know that "Mrs. Carolina M. Somebody, childbirth" experienced her baby dying 12 hours after birth. The newspaper entries often hurt people, or left them open to prying questions from neighbors. So newspapers are not allowed to even have a list of hospitalized patients now.
