It was a particularly cruel way to put someone to death. As long as they could stand on the little ledge they could breathe. Allowing themselves to drop down would inhibit their ability to take a breath. As long as one could stay awake and have the energy to stand one could live. But it's inevitable that they would falter sooner or later. It was a long drawn out tortuous death.
