The Northerners approved slavery because the slaves in the South worked on plantations. they would pick the seeds out of the cotton. The good cotton was then brought up to the North and the factors would take it and make things with it, so the north americans aproved slavery because they made them money. The South didn't have to work as much so were ok with it to.

Until machinery was invented to plant and harvest crops, large numbers of people were needed to work the farms. The larger the farm, the larger the amount of farm workers were needed. Slavery presented a form of labor that kept down the labor costs. After the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, many of the large plantations broke into smaller parcels, and the sharecropper system supplanted the slaves, until the advent of the mechanical reaper.
