The main reason for the Spanish-American War and American support of Cuban rebels who wanted independence from Cuba was that Americans wanted to protect their business interest in this country. Similarly, public opinion and the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana Harbor also were other factors.

They did not support it at all, mostly because it was a Communist revolution. The USA however did support an attempt at counter-revolution through the infamous 'invasion of the Bay of Pigs'. The attempt however failed miserably. The USA only now is beginning to lift some of the embargo measures it took against Cuba in the 1960's.
