Amos became a prophet of God because God called him to prophesy against the Northern kingdom of Israel and also against the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

When God calls on a person to do something it is in their interest to do it. Do you remember the story of Jonah and the "great Fish? Well, Jonah could have avoided this and other problems if only he had heeded God's call.

Amos was a shepherd type person and not even trained in the prophets school, but God saw fit to use him.
