Guatama Buddha, as a young man became acutely aware of the amount of suffering in this world; people get sick, they grow old and die, and often are cruel to each other. He wondered why that was so, so he started by living as an ascetic, traveling through the region looking for answers to his question. Then he decided to meditate on the question until he could discover the truth. After a long period of meditation under a Bodhi tree he became enlightened, and then began teaching people about what he learned. His students analyzed his teachings and meditated on them and became convinced. Some of them also became enlightened and so the practice spread.
He meditated many times between the time he started his quest till he reached enlightenment, but as for the time he meditated under the Bodhi tree it was for one night.

The buddha (in his final task before actually becoming the Buddha) was not tempted by anyone else when he sat under the bodhi tree, in-fact he was tempted by mara, the name for the deepest negative consciousness that resides within someone. To become enlightened, the buddha first had to resist the temptations of lust and greed. In the myth, these take the form of a man's three beautiful (at first) daughters. In his tranced state, the spirits try to seduce him. When this doesn't work, the spirits faces melt away and disintegrate. The buddha had now passed his final test. He sat for days, in complete harmony with the world around him. he then awoke, and saw the universe in a new light. Many others have followed in the Buddha's path.

The Buddha achieved enlightenment while sitting under a fig tree, whose species is now called ficus religious. The specific tree is called The Bodhi tree, where Bodhi means Enlightenment.AnswerThe Buddha just before he became a Buddha as a Bodhisattva, sat under the Assattha (Pali), often called the Bodhi-tree, and thereupon attained enlightenment becoming a Buddha. There is, however, more to this. The Pali word Assattha is probably the past participle of the Pali word, 'assasati' which can literally mean "enter by the breath". This makes sense if we understand that Buddhahood is achieved by access to the fourth meditation or dhyana (Jp., Zen) which utilizes the breath to finally transcend it. Here the mind reaches its apex. Mind awakens to its own immaculate nature, hence, Buddha. That would be the "Bodhi Tree."Although there are many thoughts on this question the original tree, under which Buddha received the enlightenment was Ficus benghalensis, the Banyan.
