Although it was never released to the public, there were two main reasons for Buffy the Vampire Slayer to end at season 7. One major one was the fact that the lead actress Sarah Michelle Geller publicly announced that she wanted 'a break' from acting as Buffy, and her contract had finished at season 7. Another reason was that the shows creator Joss Weldon got overly confident. He had an ongoing argument with some of the major TV producers, and so when the contract between Buffy and the Channel that it ran with ran out after 7 years, he left it too late to update.

On the DVDs it said that it was cancelled because the makers thought the show was better off ending they didn't want it to have those seasons that other shows have that are not as good as the season before. Basically they thought it was its time to end.

Buufy the Vampire Slayer ends on season 7 when the potentials have gained slayer powers (because of Willow who turns into a goddess) and kill a whole army of the Turok-Hans (Uber Vamps). Spike wears a medallion that possesses a special power (Angel gave the necklace to Buffy and "Someone with a soul but more than human" is suppose to wear). It ends when Spike dies when the necklace lets out a beam of sunlight and destroys all the vamps and the HellMouth with it. The last thing we see is everyone (Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Giles not Anya (dies), Tuckers Brother (Andrew) and Prinicipal Wood standing at the edge of the Hellmouth (now a great canyon), making jokes about pushing Andrew in. Someone says to Buffy "What do you want to do now?" right at the end.

Buffy was not cancelled. Although the television network WB which originally showed Buffy did try to cancel the show, however it was picked up by UPN for seasons six and seven. UPN did not want to cancel Buffy after season seven and were prepared to go for longer but the cast, crew, writers etc decided that it was time to finish.

Hi, I don't know if you watched any of Buffy or not, so I'll try to explain a little background. :)

So, Buffy is the only Slayer. But, in Season 7 (the last one) we find out that the world is full of Potential Slayers, that is, girls that COULD be the next Slayer and get Slayer powers if the current one, Buffy, dies.

The Big Bad (villain of this season) is the First Evil, an intangible creature that wants to rid the world of Slayers by killing all the Potentials, and then kill Buffy, so with no one to replace her, the Slayer line will end forever. The First also wants to open the Hellmouth, bringing forth hell on Earth.

Buffy, Spike, Anya, Xander, Giles, Dawn, and the Potentials go to Sunnydale High School with weapons to fight an army of ubervamps (super strong vampires) beneath the school. Willow does a magic spell, giving all the Potentials in the world Slayer power, so they're as strong as Buffy.

Everyone fights, and Anya is stabbed and dies. Spike is wearing a mystical amulet with unknown powers, and during the fight, it starts glowing and radiating light through the Hellmouth. The vampires are all dusted, and Buffy runs over to Spike. As the ground shakes around them and everyone else runs to safety, an astounded Spike tells Buffy that for the first time, he can feel his Soul. She tells him she loves him, he replies, "no you don't... but thanks for saying it" and orders her run before she's crushed by the debris.

As Spike is incinerated and the nearby earth collapses, he laughs, and continues to radiate sunlight, dying to close the Hellmouth forever.

Everyone (without Spike and Anya of course) escapes Sunnydale on a school bus. Standing in front of the crater that was once their small town, the team ponders the fact that since Potentials all around the world are realizing their true powers and becoming Slayers, Buffy no longer has to fight the 'good fight' alone and is free to pursue a normal life. Dawn questions, "Buffy, what are we going to do now?" Buffy doesn't answer, but smiles as she contemplates their future.

Hope this helps!! :) Buffy is AMAZING. Watch the show when you get a chance!! <3
