Elgar said of his "Variations on an Original Theme" that there is a well-known tune hidden in the work which, nevertheless, is not played outright. The "enigma" is the question of what that tune might be, and it has given the work its second name, the "Enigma Variations." Elgar took the secret with him to the grave.
