Why was the rubix cube invented?

According to About.com, Erno Rubik invented his Magic Cube in 1974 to answer his own structural design question, "How could the blocks move independently without falling apart?"

According to the Rubik's cube website, the cube was invented because "he wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry."

Ironically, he did not design the cube to be the world's best selling toy.

Rubik's initial attempt to use elastic bands failed, his solution was to have the blocks hold themselves together by their shape. Rubik hand carved and assembled the little cubies together. He marked each side of the big Cube with adhesive paper of a different color, and started twisting.

Erno came up with the idea of the rubik's cube because he needed some way to show his students how molecules interact in a 3-dimensional world. the original rubik's cube was made of wood and magnets. The original also didn't have any stickers on it. After he showed it to his students, somehow stickers were put on it and eventually it was discovered that after it was mixed up it was very difficult to get back. Soo he patented the idea and then in 1980 a toy company bought the rights and the rubik's cube was born (orignaly called magic cube)
