But one star is particularly useful. The Sun is a star, and it provides us with the energy we need to sustain life on earth. Without that energy coming in every day all plants would die, all animals that eat plants would soon die, all animals that eat animals that eat plants would die.

Most humans would die quite quickly - mainly of cold. Without sunlight it would get very very cold. A few humans hiding in nuclear bomb shelters would survive for a while.

So that is why we need one star very much.

When you say "the solar system," are you referring to our own? If so, our solar system has only one star, and that is the sun. Our solar system consists of our single star plus all of the planets, asteroids, comets, etc. which orbit around it.

All of the other stars you see in the sky are also suns like ours -- some the same size and color, others small and white-hot, and still others huge and reddish. They just look like tiny pinpoints of light because they are so far away. And each of those stars potentially can have its own solar system, with planets, comets, etc.

As for the question of "why" every solar system has a star at its center, this has to do with the way stars are formed. Gravity causes clouds of dust and gas in space to collapse inward in a swirling motion. Most of the matter collects at the center, where the gravitational pressure causes fusion reactions and makes the star burn. The matter which does not fall toward the center of the system eventually coalesces into planets or other smaller objects, which continue to orbit around the star's center of gravity.

We need the Sun, for the energy it gives us. Other stars are like our Sun - and it is already confirmed that many of them have planets. Perhaps most, but that is not known for sure yet. It is not known whether many of those planets have some kind of life. If they do - and this is but speculation for now - then God's purpose is to have a great number of planets with life.

Not sure about the Moon; perhaps for variety. It's role might not be as essencial as that of the Sun.
