Why did Adolf Hitler become the leader of the Nazi Party?

Formation of the Nazi party (NSDAP)In 1919 Hitler was sent by the German army to spy on the predecessor of the Nazi party - the DAP. So he had to join it. It was very small and only one of about 80-90 extreme right-wing parties in the Munich area. The DAP was completely amateurish. It relied on handwritten and typed invitations to meetings, for example! The committee included almost all the active members.

One day Hitler, fed up with listening to the boring speeches, went way beyond his brief as a spy for the army. He mounted the platform and delivered a lengthy rabble-rousing speech,

The bombed out old failure on the margins of society soon discovered he had a talent - as a demagogue, as rabble-rouser.

The forerunner of the Nazi Party was the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (German Workers' Party), founded by Anton Drexler, a machine-fitter, and Karl Harrer, a sports journalist, on 5 January 1919. The party propogated nationalist, xenophobic, antisemitic, pseudo-socialist views.

Hitler was given the task of observing the party and reporting on their activities. He made his visit to a party meeting on 12 September 1919. He did not get involved in the debate until one of the speakers advocated that Bavaria leave the Reich. Hitler spoke and countered the speaker's arguments so eloquently that he was noticed by one of the party's founders, Anton Drexler, who then pursued Hitler to join the party. On 19 October 1919 Hitler joined the party as its 55th member.

Because of his talents as a public speaker and because of his forceful personality, The party soon began to draw large crowds, especially when Hitler was the main speaker. Hitler was so successful that, upon being discharged from the army, he was able to live comfortably from his speaker's fees alone. Hitler was involved in thrashing out a 25 point program for the party and at his instigation, the party changed its name to Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP)(National Socialist German Worker's Party). In July 1921 Hitler threatened to leave the party unless the party leadership was dismissed and he was elected party leader. The party, realising that Hitler had been the only reason it had survived the last two years, quickly gave in to his demands.

Hitler then moulded the party in his own image.

Hitler was just a screwed up man. He had to blame someone for the downfall of Europe, so he channeled all of the people's anger to the Jews. There are many reasons to his uprise, but this is the primary one.
